Halliwell Landau on the move

David Thame
18/10/2004

MANCHESTER law firm Halliwell Landau is close to agreeing to take a 130,000-sq ft headquarters at the Spinningfield development on Deansgate and speculation is mounting that it has opted for the prime city centre location when it moves from its existing offices on Brown Street.

Insiders at Halliwells confirm that talks with Spinningfield's developers, Allied London Properties, have been taking place but say that no final decisions have been reached.

Halliwells is understood to have been considering a short list of three sites: Piccadilly, the Grand Island site at West Whitworth Street and the mighty Spinningfield office complex off Deansgate.

No one was available for comment at Spinningfield's letting agents, Dunlop Heywood Lorenz.

Halliwells confirmed in March this year that it had a 130,000-sq ft city centre office requirement.

The law firm issued a briefing document to potential developers, and instructed agents Lambert Smith Hampton to act on its behalf. It is looking for offices to replace its three current city centre buildings at Tootal House, 1 Norfolk Street and St James' Court.

Manchester's lawyers have been the driving force in the city office market for the last three months.

Cobbetts has agreed to take a new 114,000-sq ft office block in Mosley Street. Developers Maple Grove has pre-sold the investment, on the site of Eagle Star House, to a consortium of private Irish investors for more than '40m.

Earlier this spring, north west-based developer Maple Grove agreed to buy the property, which had been derelict for over a decade, for '5.75m from Royal London Insurance.

Cobbetts will move from Ship Canal House, King Street.
