That's a bargain price for a tried and tested touring model, with room for two adults plus luggage.
Since its launch in 1999 the XL1000 has won over a dedicated band of bikers who enjoy the mile-munching capability that the machine offers and the big Honda's general reliability.
Although the bike uses the thirsty Firestorm V-Twin motor, the Varadero was improved for 2003 with a more frugal fuel-injection, updated styling, a new dash layout and the inclusion of a sixth gear - handy for motorway cruising, and extra fuel economy.
The Varadero lacks the sharper handling of rivals like the BMW R1200GS, or the grunt of the Triumph Tiger, plus many a Honda fan actually preferred the old Africa Twin - a bike that could actually handle some gentle off-road pottering.
But there's no denying that at seven grand the Varadero offers terrific value and many owners have racked up over 50,000 miles without any major problems.
There's a range of official Honda accessories available for the Varadero, including heated grips, a centre-stand and hard and soft luggage systems.
