Old engine lets new Buell down

LACKS OOMPH: Buell Ulysses
LACKS OOMPH: Buell Ulysses
BUELL bikes, part of the Harley-Davidson empire, have struggled to catch on, despite trick chassis layout and a unique, gutsy V-Twin motor powering most of the range.

But Harley-Davidson are plugging away and for 2007 the Ulysses adventure touring model gets some useful updates.

The seat has been re-shaped, and lowered, which is good news for a short-legged bloke like me. The Ulysses also gets new fork springs, to reduce front end dive under hard braking.

I can't say that the handling of the 2006 Ulysses was especially soft, or vague at the front end. In fact, I thought it went great around corners, it just lacked some oomph on the straights. Sadly, this hasn't been addressed for 2007. Harley-Davidson claim the Buell 1203cc motor makes 100bhp, but it still feels woefully underpowered.

The Buell does make a user-friendly lunge of power lowdown the rev range, but it runs of steam at 5000rpm or so, and the gearbox still feels crude and stiff.

I liked the riding position of the Buell Ulysses, the wide handlebars, the comfortable seat and the size of the hard luggage fitted was impressive too. The belt drive is impressive, not only because it is easy to maintain, but I have never heard of a belt snapping, which on a torquey bike like this is pretty amazing.
