ZX-6R: One for the track

Kawasaki ZX-6R
Kawasaki ZX-6R
KAWASAKI'S ZX-6R is one of my favourite 600cc sportbikes, for track use only of course, with a good spread of power and really light, rapid steering.

The new model has had some tweaks to the fuel/air intake system to keep that midrange poke and Kawasaki claim that the new Ninja 600 has a really wide power band - something that's lacking in some other 600cc class sportbikes.

That will be a clever trick to pull off, as Kawasaki has started from scratch with the 2007 Ninja 600, dropping the old 636cc engine.

I would expect the smaller motor to be more revvy, if only to meet noise and emissions targets, whilst making the sort of power to keep it competitive with Honda's CBR600RR, the R6 and Triumph's stunning 675 Daytona. But I may well be surprised with the new Ninja's torque.

The 2006 Kawasaki ZX-6R chassis was already very good, but, for 2007, Kawasaki claim they have improved things by starting with a clean sheet of paper. Looking at the pictures, I think the bike looks a bit small, a bit too compact, for taller riders, but I'm sure it will handle brilliantly.

But the bottom line with many of these bikes is that as brilliant as they are around Silverstone or Donington, they can't really be used properly, or ridden sedately, in any comfort on the public road.

The new ZX-6R, will be at the NEC show later this month and probably on sale next March.
