Take bends like Beckham

BMW M3
BMW M3
YOU'VE got pots of cash, a celebrity squeeze and a penchant for the best in automotive bling? Then you're in good company, for trend-setting soccer star David Beckham has once again given his inadvertent endorsement to a fashion accessory.

A BMW M3 Evolution once owned by the former Manchester United star has this week fetched £90,000 in an eBay auction.

With 70,000 miles on the clock and overpriced by at least £80,000 (according to the suggested price in Parker's Car Price Guide), Beckham's old M3 Evolution isn't exactly typical of the breed.

But the sale at least reveals the iconic power of both Beckham and the BMW M3. And the best news is that you can obtain a new one for less than half the price paid by the eBay auction winner.

"Wow," I hear you say, "only £41,150 - is it really worth it?" Well, there are certainly those who think it is. The M3 derivative takes a 3 Series coupe, one of the most desirable in its class, and makes it even better.

Enjoying its third incarnation - a fourth should follow this year's introduction of the new 3 Series - the M3 first appeared in 1986 as a road-going version of BMW's race-spec coupe.

The third and latest generation of the M3, which I was able to drive, first went on sale in April, 2001, and brought with it the kind of aggressive power which would lead hot hatch owners to doff their caps.

But, then, it has looks which would lead any motorist to give way.

The four-tail exhaust system, chromed aeronautic-style side air intakes and 19in alloy wheels all add an even more striking pose to BMW's already sexy coupe.

Inside, it's a similar picture, with leather-bound sporting seats and a delicious cockpit, embellished with those all-important M badges.

But perhaps most impressively, the sporting theme doesn't quite manage to spoil the M3's chances as a family-friendly car.

Oh, no, it takes somebody with a heavy right foot, nerves of steel and faith in the car's ability to safely handle 343bhp to do that.

The first thing that strikes you is the availability of apparently limitless power across a race-bred, six-speed manual gear box.

Like a talented football player, it gives effortlessly in every gear.

On the down-side, buying a new BMW M3 means spending in the region of £40,000 for the ultimate chav conveyance. But, despite all this, the M3 is a surprisingly well-behaved beast.

And that's no doubt why people like David Beckham like it so much.

If you really want to take bends like Beckham, then there's nothing to beat it.
