Top ten gigs of 2005

REFRESHING: Arctic Monkeys
REFRESHING: Arctic Monkeys
FROM the re-birth of Britpop to the resurgence of prog rock and the much-maligned singer-songwriter - it’s been quite a year for the UK’s live music scene.

Here are my top ten gigs of 2005 (click on the links below to read some of the reviews):

Arctic Monkeys @ Club Nirvana - Set to capture a million hearts in 2006, Sheffield’s Alex Turner and Co put on a blockbusting performance of their own in this converted cinema. Do believe the hype.

New Order @ Apollo - Back in town to show young whippersnappers Editors, The Killers et al that there is still life in the old dog yet.

Oasis @ City Of Manchester Stadium - The weather may have threatened to turn sour but 55,000 thousand inebriated Mancunians couldn’t have cared less, the band that sound-tracked their youth came home to blow the competition out of the water.

Tracy Chapman @ Apollo - The night young and old came to worship at the table of one of the most cherished singer-songwriters of her generation.

Hard-Fi @ Academy 2 - Booked before the Staines quartet exploded out of the suburbs and all over our beach holiday radios, this was surely a last chance to get up close and personal with the Stars Of CCTV.

Razorlight @ Apollo - He may have an ego as puffed up as his hair, but Johnny Borrell should on this form be allowed to continue to think big.

Doves @ The Ritz - The pubs may have just opened but the Whitworth Street West venue was still in full party mode for this Carling Live 24 date. Stadiums should beckon if there is any justice in 2006.

Coldplay @ Reebok Stadium - Chris Martin and the gang made a wise choice for the location of their Fix You video as anyone who has seen the promo will testify. The group proved playing an intimate set in a massive venue is an art indeed.

The White Stripes @ Apollo - Fronted by the greatest showman in music today? Possibly. Powered on by the most endearing drummer? Definitely.

Ian Brown @ Blackpool Empress Ballroom - He promised an Easter rising and we got one. Well a musical one at least.
