Spotlight on myth and music of The Smiths

THE myth and musical legacy of The Smiths will tax some of the world's brightest brains at an academic conference.

Scholars and writers from around the world will converge on the band's home town for a conference at Manchester Metropolitan University on April 8 and 9.

Among the topics academics will challenge be the view that The Smiths were quintessentially English, by suggesting they are better labelled "Manchester-Irish".

The symposium, called Why Pamper Life's Complexities, from the song This Charming Man, will explore lead singer Morrissey and his band's lyrics and music from literary and cultural points of view.

There will be talks by DJ and cultural historian Dave Haslam, plus writers John Harris, Simon Goddard and Sheila Whiteley.
