CAROL AINSCOW (right) is a leading property developer, chairman of the Manto Group, which owns many well-known clubs and bars in Manchester. Expressnetworks, the former Daily Express building, neighbouring Virginia House and the warehouse redevelopment on Pollard St are some of her projects. EWM says: Carol Ainscow has had an enormous influence both on property development and nightlife in central Manchester.

MRS LINNAEUS BANKS gave us a vivid picture of Manchester in the 19th century in her novel 'The Manchester Man'. She was a member of the Ladies Committee of the Anti-Corn Law League.

EWM says: Mrs Banks' Manchester Man was perhaps the inspiration for the ill-bred but wealthy mill-owner whose daughter was to marry the Prince Regent in the TV comedy "Blackadder".

ARMAND BEESLEY, hairdresser and TV personality used to run his own salon at Kendals before going freelance and appearing on TV AM. He also writes for magazines and newspapers, including the Manchester Evening News.
EWM says: Armand Beesley is the quintessential Mr Breezy Man About Town.
STEPHANIE BISHOP actress and producer works with her partner the film director and producer John McCormack.
EWM says: Steph was wonderful to work with on two films, and played a key role both behind and in front of the camera.
CAROLYN BLAIN has been closely involved with the Manchester Civic Society since it was founded around 1994. She also played a key role in the regeneration of the Medlock Valley.
EWM says: She is a tireless campaigner and is persuasive, forceful and charming all at the same time.
TOM BLOXHAM is the award-winning property developer and founder of Urban Splash. His company has converted old industrial buildings in Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham into plush apartments.
EWM says: In their tasteful conversion of old warehouses, Urban Splash are notable exponents of a modernist, minimalist style. See my 1998 interview with Tom Bloxham, now OBE.
TOMMY BOYLE is an actor with many connections to Didsbury. He has featured on television dramas from the 1970's to today.
EWM says: Born in south Manchester of Irish extraction, Tommy experienced a tough upbringing. He is one of Manchester's great characters.
KEITH BRADLEY is the Member of Parliament for the Withington constituency, which covers roughly the area from the river Mersey in the south to Wilbraham Rd in the north. Here he is pictured standing on Wilmslow Road Withington, with a Shearings 41 bus in the background.
EWM says: I first met Keith Bradley on a visit to the Houses of Parliament in 1987. This photo was taken after a Manchester Chamber of Commerce breakfast event.
WINSTON CARRINGTON was a newspaper vendor with ambitions to go into TV and drama. Soon after I photographed him in 1998 he gave up his vending job to move on to new things.
EWM says: Winston is a real Manchester character, with lots of life experience which he loves to tell you about.

SHAUN CARTER is a musician and actor - He has played in a number of Manchester bands and is an experienced film actor. He lives in Levenshulme.
EWM says: Shaun has something quintessentially mancunian - very laid back, eternally youthful and very much into music

HRH PRINCE CHARLES has been a regular visitor to Manchester and supports many local charities. Here he is pictured visiting the Salvation Army hostel on Grosvenor Street in 1997.
EWM says: This was one of his first official engagements after the death of Diana. He showed humour and compassion in the way he interacted with members of the local community who had turned up to see him.
SUZANNAH CLARKE is a professional opera singer. She studied with Pavarotti's singing teacher and sang the National Anthem solo at Wembley Euro 1996 in front of millions.
EWM says: As a professional soprano, she very much looks the part, but she was no prima donna when I met her, in fact she was very friendly and chatty.

NICK CLARKE is a leading light in design, graphics, computing, telematics and multimedia. This author, journalist and ex-professional guitarist was born on Werneth Low in 1960. He was director of the Manchester Multimedia Centre from its inception in 1996 to closure in 2002.
EWM says: Nick is a leader in his field but comes across as being very modest.

RICHARD COBDEN the 19th century industrialist and campaigner fought for the repeal of the Corn Laws and was instrumental in achieving the incorporation of Manchester as a city in 1838.
EWM says: I learned about Richard Cobden when I visited Cobden House Chambers on Quay Street. The barristers who now occupy his former home have restored the building wonderfully.
TARA DANIELS is an actress, director and performer who has worked in television and the theatre. She played Amy in the BBC comedy 'Oh Dr Beeching' and has acted in Coronation St. She has played leading roles in the Rochdale Panto. She runs her own production company Zeitgeist productions and teaches drama.
EWM says: Tara is highly professional and multi-talented - acting, singing, dancing, fire-eating and stiltwalking are just some of her many talents.
KIRSTY DOYLE has acted in several television roles and in the Stephen Gibbons short film 'Drug Abuse' in which she played the long-suffering girlfriend of a violent drug dealer.
EWM says: Kirsty has the ability to look drugged out one minute and glamorous the next.
CLLR ALISON FIRTH is a Liberal Democrat councillor for Withington. She also works at the John Rylands Library, pictured in the photo on the wall.
EWM says: Alison is closely involved in decisions affecting Wilmslow Road, which as she pointed out, is the busiest bus route in Europe! I met Alison a Manchester Chamber of Commerce breakfast event 30 May 03.
