THE IMAGES DISPLAYED ON THIS PAGE focus on St Mary's Gate and the buildings around it. The original gate has long since disappeared. The name refers to the street which runs from the bottom of Market Street down to Deansgate. St Mary's Gate is at the heart of Manchester's newly recreated shopping district and like Market Street has old on one side and new on the other.

MARKET STREET is Manchester's busiest shopping street. This part of the Arndale Centre forms a bridge over the street. On the upper floor is the Food Court , with shops underneath. We are looking across the street where Cross Street turns into Corporation Street (left).

EWM says: The red and blue neon and the bright lights under the bridge are an eye-catching feature in the dusk light.
ST MARY'S GATE AT DUSK with the bright lights of the Arndale Centre above Market Street visible in the centre, the M&S store on the left and Royal Exchange on the right.

EWM says: Manchester's new newly revamped shopping quarter is an interesting mix of old and new.
ST MARY'S GATE AT DUSK with the new M&S building on New Cathedral Street on the left. The curved corner echoes the other buildings overlooking this intersection.

EWM says: There's a great view from the M&S coffee bar on the first floor inside the curved window.
ST MARY'S GATE is at the heart of Manchester's revamped shopping district. Go straight on to get to Deansgate, St Ann's Square is off to the left with New Cathedral Street on the right. In front of us is the new Shambles West retail development, part of which has opened in time for Christmas 2002. Jutting up into the dusk sky is the exclusive apartment building Number One Deansgate.

EWM says: Interesting how the sloping roofline of No 1 Deansgate forms a continuous line with the roof of the new Shambles West - the effect of perspective.
THE ROYAL EXCHANGE stands on the corner of St Mary's Gate, seen from New Cathedral Street at dusk.

EWM says: The tower of the Royal Exchange has been a familiar landmark for over 100 years, and now stands side by side with contemporary buildings. The M&S building looks less attractive here, presenting us with a plain and featureless wall above New Cathedral Street.
LOOKING TOWARDS ST ANN'S SQUARE AT DUSK, the Royal Exchange is on the left and on the corner opposite, the recently renovated corner facade. The tower of St Ann's Church can just be seen in the distance on the left.

EWM says: I'm very glad to see that the building on the corner, dating from the 50's or 60's has been attractively renovated rather than demolished.
LOOKING INTO ST ANN'S SQUARE from St Mary's Gate at dusk, with Christmas lights and the German and European markets. Every year during the run-up to Christmas, traders come from Germany, Holland and other parts of Europe and set up their stalls on St Ann's Square and Albert Square. The markets are organised by Manchester City Council.

EWM says: The German and European Markets are an excellent attraction and a favourite with shoppers. I'm most partial to the German sausages and beer.
