The pedestrian underpass beneath the Mancunian Way at Brook Street is in a pitiful state. It is covered in graffiti, strewn with broken bottles, rubbish and worse. It is dirty and threatening at night. This area is part of the pedestrian link between the southern and northern campuses of the newly united Manchester University and is just a minute's walk away from the studios of BBC North.
