The eastern gateway of Mancunian Way is marked by the
railway viaduct which first opened in 1842 as part of the Manchester to
Birmingham railway. It was electrified around 1960 and continues in use
as the West Coast line to London. The blue-painted First North Western
train waiting on the left serves regional destinations. This section of
the Mancunian Way is part of the A635, which branches off to the right
just beyond the viaduct, and leads to Ashton, Tameside, the Pennines and
eventually, Doncaster.
