Manchester's Odeon cinema closed on 2 September 2004 after 74 years in continuous use. In early 2005 the building stands empty and could go the same way as many other old cinemas, unless a new use is found for it. The reasons behind the closure of the Odeon are complex and not confined to Manchester, but is this what we really want?
