Kendals is one of the oldest and most
prestigious names in the Manchester retail scene. This is the
main entrance facing onto Deansgate. The older name Kendal Milne &
Co is inscribed in gold lettering above the door. In 2005 owners House
of Fraser announced they would be dropping the name Kendals. From
later in 2005 onwards, the store will be known as House of Fraser.
Should the name Kendals be protected as an important identifier of
Manchester, like Harrods in London or KaDeWe in Berlin, or should we
simply move with the dictates of modern marketing and consign the
Kendals name to history?
