In 2002, the trackbed of the
former South Manchester Loop Line was dug up and strewn with rocks and
bits of concrete. Since then, the pedestrian 'Greenway', spearheaded by
the Friends of the South Manchester Loop Line, has been extended
eastwards, providing a tarmac surface for pedestrians and cyclists as
far as Levenshulme. The view of the bridge at the far end of the
former station has been blocked by the embankment built to take the
path from the cutting up to street level.
EWM says: It's good that what remains of the line has been adapted, but
I preferred it when it was a railway, carrying goods trains between
Yorkshire and Trafford Park, and before that, passenger trains to
Central Station.
