I love neon signs, especially the ones here at Granada Studios Tour - It would be nice if there were more neon signs in Manchester City Centre.

1242: Balls, St Ann's Square Manchester

Camera: Agfa E-Photo 1280 (digital)
Enhanced in Adobe Photoshop

These are the notorious balls in St Ann's Square, installed by Manchester City Council as part of a renovation scheme.

They are completely out of character with the surroundings, collect rubbish underneath and look very run-down as it's difficult to maintain the smooth stone surface.

They should be removed as soon as possible.

Hulme has been extensively rebuilt since the demolition of the notorious Crescents.

This is an example of the type of housing now being built - a modern, clean design using the local traditional building material: red bricks.

In 1999, the River Irwell is cleaner than it has been for hundreds of years. On the right is the Mark Addy pub. The building in the centre contains apartments, and the offices of HM Customs, and replaces the warehouse building which used to stand here.

Another view of Piccadilly before redevelopment. Will Manchester City Council succeed in their plan to put an office block on Piccadilly Gardens, to the right of this scene?

The Victoria Baths opened in 1906 and were in regular use until Manchester City Council closed them in 1992 due to a shortage of money.

This remarkable building is still in good condition, despite the effects of the pigeons, who are now the only users.

The Friends of Victoria Baths are campaigning to find a way of re-opening this much-needed civic amenity.

If this building were in Bath, Harrogate or Budapest, I'm sure it would be a tourist attraction. It's a scandal that the Victoria Baths are lying empty and unused.
