Irwell Valley, Clifton Disused railway Viaduct This railway viaduct used to carry trains from Clifton Junction, on the existing Manchester to Bolton line across the Irwell Valley to the Manchester to Bury line, now part of the Metrolink system. Parts of the disused line are incorporated into the Irwell Valley Way nature trail. Though smaller than the Stockport viaduct, and sadly unused by trains, it is a powerful symbol of the past. It's clearly visible from the M60 between Prestwich and Clifton where it crosses the River Irwell. Keywords: bridges, railways, water, rivers |
