752: Manchester Ship Canal bridges, Warrington Feb99 ©Aidan O'Rourke

The Manchester Ship Canal runs from Salford to the Mersey estuary via Warrington. The once busy canal is now only occasionally used. The bridges along the whole stretch of the canal are of a similar design - the curved swing-bridge here is almost identical to Trafford Rd Bridge (right) at the very top of the canal. The high-level railway bridge, now unused, is similar to another near Irlam - in use and renovated in 1999. This photo (left) was taken looking from one of the smaller bridges, which like all the others, was constructed with a high clearance to allow ocean-going ships and their masts, to pass underneath.
