830-839

830: The Clarence pub, Rusholme, Manchester Mar1997.

The original and genuine Irish pub in Rusholme, it doesn't need to advertise its Irishness with an Irish-sounding name or wall to wall shamrocks. Here you'll find Irish traditional music and a good selection of local and Irish beers. (Other keywords: pubs, Irish pubs )

831 O'Rafferty's pub (formerly the Windsor Castle), Edgeley, Stockport. Mar1997

The pub that once bore a quintessentially British name is now O'Rafferty's Irish bar. I wonder what they did with the old sign, which had a picture of Windsor Castle. My primary school, Our Lady's, is two minutes away from here to the left. (Other keywords: pubs, Irish pubs)

832: Scuffy Murphy's pub, Grosvenor Street, All Saints Mar1997

This attractive one-storey building was converted into a convincing pastiche of an Irish pub, with shop windows that look as though they were shipped over from the main street of an Irish country town. (Other keywords: pubs, Irish pubs)

833: Biddy Mulligan's pub (formerly the Midway) Levenshulme Mar1997

The Midway was so named because it's half way between Stockport and Manchester. In the 1990's this solidly traditional English pub was given a make- over and transformed into "Biddy Mulligans". Having once been a regular in the original Mulligans pub on Poolbeg St, Dublin, I can vouch for which one is more authentic. (Other keywords: pubs, Irish pubs)

834: Lake near Alkrington Hall, Middleton Mar1999

Surrounded on all sides by houses, this lake in Alkrington is popular with anglers. Through the trees far left can be seen St Leonard's Church, Middleton (Other keywords: water, fishing)

835: Sackville Park Manchester City Centre 14Mar1999

This park is overlooked by Shena Simon College and warehouses converted into apartments. A new layout is planned which will hopefully bring more people into this oasis of green in the city centre. Keywords: parks, gardens, Gay Village

836: Houses, Lake Drive, seen from Home Drive, Alkrington

A typically English suburban setting enhanced by a pond with waterfowl. People living in tower blocks in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi or Collyhurst might dream about scenes such as this. (Other keywords: houses, suburbs, water)

837: Piccadilly Plaza, Manchester from Portland St Feb1999

The gargantuan glass and concrete outline of Piccadilly Plaza forces you to strain your neck to look up at it, no matter where you're standing. The recently-sold development, completed in 1965 (architects Covell Matthews & Partners) is run-down and ready for redevelopment.

838: The Irish Market, Albert Square Sunday 14 Mar1999

This is the view from the steps of the Town Hall on the afternoon of the Irish Parade. Traders from Ireland are selling a variety of Irish products from the temporary market set up in the square. (Other keywords: St Patrick's Day, Irish, Irish festival, festivals Albert Square, Albert Memorial)

839: Telephone House, Sackville Street/Portland St 13Mar1999

Telephone House (built 1961 designed by architects E Norman Bailey & Partners) is in the classic modernist glass-walled style, similar to the much taller CIS building. After nearly four decades, the building is run down and this style of architecture is not currently in favour. It is to be demolished to make way for a new hotel. This view is from the top of Chorlton St multi-storey car park. (Other keywords: redevelopment, demolition, architecture)
