We are three miles east of Manchester city centre - this is the main road to Ashton under Lyne - the hills above Ashton are clearly visible. Mobile phone transmitters are ubiquitous nowadays, and are often mounted on older buildings, such as this one which overlooks the River Medlock. The transmitter equipment is ultra modern, but the building, one of the few remaining in this part of town, is decrepit, but still in use. (Keywords: redevelopment, telephone)

865: OLD TRAM TRACKS St Mary's Gate Mar1999

These tram tracks were uncovered when the street was dug up for resurfacing in March 1999. They recall pictures of this part of the city from nearly 100 years ago, when the Victoria Buildings stood across the street from here. The Victoria Buildings were badly damaged in the 1940 Blitz. 10 years later, trams had disappeared from Manchester. (Other keywords: archaeology, history, public transport)

Chetham's School has some of the oldest buildings in Manchester - these ones date from the 16th century and are reminiscent of Oxford or Cambridge. This area of Manchester has been transformed by post-war demolition and redevelopment. Despite the disappearance of the old terraced streets that used to stand here, some landmarks have survived, including the Church of St Francis, Gorton, which can be seen in the distance.
