880: THE TRAFFORD CENTRE car park at dusk Feb1999

This is close to the main first floor entrance of the Trafford Centre which opened in September 1998. At night, the domes are lit up - braziers with neon "flames" adorn the exterior of the building, which here houses the Selfridges store (right) (Keywords: shopping, Dumplington, Peel Holdings, Trafford Park)

881: DAFFODILS GROSVENOR SQUARE All Saints Mar1999

All Saints Church used to stand on this site, which was renovated in the 1990's by Manchester Metropolitan University. The buildings of MMU (formerly the Polytechnic) overlook the square. (Keywords: flowers, universities)

882: TESCO PETROL station sign, Baguley, March1999

In the budget of 1999, Chancellor Gordon Brown raised duty on fuel by 4p, but the price of petrol rose from around 60p at the beginning of March to nearly 70 at the end. The price at this supermarket station is no different than at other stations - too expensive!

883: NEW BUILDING Oxford Rd (UMIST)

This building went into service in September 1998. Just behind, work proceeds on the new Commonwealth Games swimming pool complex. (Other keywords: universities)

884: BARBIROLLI 1 AND 2 March 1999

This pair of high-tech glass and metallic buildings, named after the late Sir John Barbirolli, conductor of the Halle Orchester, symbolise the economic regeneration of Manchester in the 1990's. Just off to the right is the Bridgewater Hall, and in the foreground can be seen the Metrolink tram tracks on Lower Mosley Street. (Other keywords: office buildings, architecture)

 

885: CASTLEFIELD postcard April 1999

These scenes were taken around the district of Castlefield, once a neglected and run down industrial district, now one of the city's favourite places for pubs and cafe bars. Barca (top left) is built under a railway arch and recalls the city of Barcelona. It's part-owned by Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall. (Other keywords: Bridgewater Canal, flowers, water)

886: THE OPERA HOUSE Quay St Manchester March99

The Opera House was nearly closed down, but nowadays is the venue for many famous musicals and stage shows. (Keywords: music, entertainment, theatres)

887: LIVERPOOL WATERFRONT from Birkenhead March1999

888: OLD FALLOWFIELD Station building & new Sainsbury's Mar1999
