891: HOMES FOR SALE OR RENT in city centre Manchester (available in the next few years) Apr1999 & Dec1997

More and more 19th century warehouses and 20th century office buildingsin city centre Manchester are being converted for use as apartments.

Here we see a small and surprising selection: The National Buildings, Parsonage Gardens - left hand building dates from 1905, and the right hand extension was added 60 years later. Top centre is the Sunley Tower, part of Piccadilly Plaza, opened in 1965. Sunley tower is currently occupied by the Government Office for the North West, and others. The tower has been suggested for possible conversion into apartments.

Top right, old mill buildings Cambridge Street, south of Whitworth St. The chimney has been saved, though it won't be emitting any smoke!

Bottom left: the former Hacienda building, to be converted into flats. This is what the Manchester Civic Society suggested when it was first proposed to demolish the right hand section of the builidng. The penthouse apartment in the rotunda, top left, is expected to be put on sale for around £300,000.

Bottom right: I've included some traditional style English semis, here occupying a commanding position above Manchester New Road, Alkrington. Many people would still much rather live in one of these than in a converted mill building in the city centre.

The Super Transporter is a converted Airbus which carries wings manufactured in Chester and other aircraft parts to the Aerospatiale factory at Toulouse in France. With its swollen back and stabliser tailfins, it looks like a machine from Thunderbirds. This aircraft replaced the "Super Guppy" a converted 1950's Stratocruiser.
