THIS IS MY MAIN MAP OF THE MANCHESTER AREA, giving an overview of appoximately 12 miles north and south, and ten miles east and west of the city centre. Motorways are shown in dark blue, main roads in green, other roads in red. The roads I've selected as main roads are those I consider to be the most important, and don't necessarily correspond to A roads as designated by the Ministry of Transport! Please forgive me if I've left off your beloved home district - there are only so many roads and names I can squeeze into 400 pixels!

The M60 (previously M61, M62 and M66) encircles the central area. The section between Audenshaw and Middleton is the final link in the circle and opens in 2000. The M62 west leads to Liverpool, in the other direction, it takes you north east across the Pennines to West Yorkshire. The M66 north takes you into Mid Lancashire. The M61 heads north west to Preston. The M56 is the main motorway south out of the city, passing the airport, crossing the Bollin into Cheshire, then turning west towards Chester. Drivers heading to Birmingham and London come off at Bowdon, and take the A556 Chester Rod to the M6, just off the map to the south.

The Manchester area is a varied and contrasting conglomeration of cities, towns, villages and country districts: At the centre are Manchester, Salford and Stretford. Around the edge of the conurbation, spread around in a wide circle are the towns Bolton, Heywood, Middleton, Rochdale, Oldham, Ashton, Hyde, Stockport Altrincham, Sale, Urmston with many other towns and villages in between.

Manchester Airport is 9 miles south of the city centre, and is situated within the boundaries of the City of Manchester. Planes landing at Manchester usually start their final approach to the north east over Hyde, descending south west over Stockport, directly over my childhood house in Cheadle Heath and Heald Green. Other local airfields are Woodford, owned by British Aerospace, and Barton Aerodrome.

This map is intended for general guidance purposes only, and may not be entirely to scale. It's based on a number of different sources, as well as my own knowledge of the area. You're welcome to try using it to find your way around, but don't blame me if you get lost!
