Dear Aidan I've enjoyed your pictures and pen portraits of Manchester people on the Manchester On-line website and wondered if you had any plans to produce something on Salford-born screen star, Albert Finney.

Yours Michael Dunne Beckenham Kent
e-mail: Michael@trainor-dunne.freeserve.co.uk

Hmmm, sounds like a good idea. But can I get to interview and photograph him? Ben Kingsley is another Salford-born actor. Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi Aidan, It is Eric from Sudbury Ontario. All the best wishes for the holiday season to you and yours. I finally found your write up in MEN today. The weather here is pretty brisk today (30 celcius below). We had a bit of snow also, now there is about a foot on the ground. What has happened to the QTVR images? I cannot access them any more.

I saw from the article that you are an ex-teacher. I am also, I retired in July 1997. The teachers here are taking early retirement here by the thousand, due to much more stringent government regulations. The students are fireproof also. If they do not want to learn, the teachers get whacked! I was originally from Tripe Colony in Miles Platting.

They tore that down last year I believe, to make room for some Olympic games site or other. Now I read that the Olympic movement is riddled with corruption. Ah well, nil carborundum. Is there any good news anywhere? (apart from City scoring the first goal in two months at Maine Road).

I do really appreciate your work keeping the world informed about what is happening in Manchester. Take care.

I'm currently re-doing the whole website, I'm creating a new page for the QTVR panoramas. I'll be doing more QTVR panoramas soon. Tripe Colony? Could you give me the name of the street? Is anyone else out there from Tripe Colony?

Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 12:33:48 -0500
From: Dave Brennan brennan@cyberbeach.net

Hi, you asked where Tripe Colony was located. It was to the north and south of Grey Mare Lane. The north side was demolished last year, or the year before, (depends when you open this missive). There was a page on it on the internet that I accessed last year. I lived on Falmouth Street. which ran north-south, between Clifton Street and Lord North Street. The east-west streets were:- Joynson, Hanbury, Wibourne, Corelli, Helston, Wedgewood, Penworth.

I think that the south side of Grey Mare Lane part of the colony is undisturbed, as you had a picture of some of the houses in the foreground of a shot of Bradford Road gasworks, you dubbed it as a part of Holt Town. There was a chemical works to the west of the recreation ground that processed sulphur. The mellifluent odour was a constant presence in the area.

When the buses used to pass through the area, most of the passengers used to mumble, in unison (pheugh!), that was an indication that we were home, so we disembarked. What was really strange was, we only used to be aware of the noxious fumes after we had been away for a couple of weeks or so. Oh by the way, we are having a hot spell right now. This morning the temperature was 26 below (celsius), but there is no wind to speak of, so it is rather pleasant at the moment.

Interesting - I think I understand why you emigrated! I've been around that area and haven't noticed any noxious fumes. Very soon, work will start on the new 2002 complex, which will be located north of Grey Mare Lane

Hello Aidan and Ann,
I would like, (on behalf of my family, and self) to extend our best wishes to you, and your's. Due to a few problem's computerwise, I am a little late with this year's greeting's. I am also late in sending my congratulation's about the excellent picture you took at Worsley. My family and I lived about a quarter of a mile from that location, and I managed to make a good copy of the view taken from near the "HUMP BACK BRIDGE". Once again thank you, and all the best for 1999. Keep up the good work, yours sincerely,

Very glad you like this picture, which will soon be available for purchase as a print and /or postcard. Are there any further locations in that area you'd like to see pictures of? Worsley is one of the most photogenic parts of the Manchester area.

Hi Aidan,
Great site, helps me keep in touch over here in South Africa - I spent nine years in Manchester and love the city and surrounds and currently busy trying to convince some South African friends that England means more than London - I think I'm getting there but I will get them to check out your site, that should do it.

Anyway, I was wondering whether you had any shots of where the new Eastlands (?) Stadium is to be built as this will give a good indication of how things change over time. My work is in construction and I like checking out sites which show projects at various stages of development - I know there will probably be an official site but it would be nice to see what it looks like now. Who knows you may even be able to sell the stadium developers your photographers when they set up their site!

Anyway keep up the good work, its good to see these familiar images to
keep the homesickness at bay.
Ciao
Stephen Allen

The Eastlands site is a huge open space at the moment - I'll be taking some shots soon. Did you see my pic of the Velodrome & canal at sunrise? Thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated.

To: aidan@anamaria.u-net.com

Hi there Aidan,
Yes I saw the photo of the canal at sunrise - this is one of my favourite photos... the sunsets here in Gauteng can also be spectacular - and lightning but there is something particularly Northern and industrial yet beautiful in this shot - maybe its a canal thing.

Anyway cheers again and I'll keep tuning in...

Congratulations on the article in the MEN. It's about time you received some recognition in your own country. Now the Manchester folks at home know what we out in the "colonies" have known for a long time - - you have the best web site anywhere.

I first "discovered" you a couple of years ago when I worked in the Pentagon and have thoroughly enjoyed keeping up with you ever since. I was privileged to have a preview of the site when you reconstructed it earlier this year, and must say, it is just great. I was glad to see that you are now being paid for your work; whatever the MEN gives you, it isn't enough!! I can't recall the number of people I have told about Eyewitness.

A friend from Raleigh is living near London and I gave him the address just this week so he can log on and find out more about Manchester. Being an American he thinks London is the ONLY place to see in England, but he will change his mind when he sees those wonderful pictures of Manchester and the surrounding area.

The picture of the Whitworth Art Gallery really brought back some fond memories. My grandfather used to take us there and gave me an appreciation for art that I have to this day. He was quite a character and belonged to a group of elderly men who called themselves the "Fantails." They used to meet daily in Whitworth Park and play cards, mostly cribbage as I recall. He was definitely eccentric but a wonderful man.

His older brother was Sam Ryder who began the golf competition known as the Ryder Cup. My grandfather was not as well known as Sam, except among his colleagues at the Manchester Corporation where he took care of all the clocks.

Did not mean to ramble on, but I think your page tends to cause all this nostalgia, especially at this time of the year. So, thanks for many enjoyable times and have a Happy Christmas! Trish Ryder, an old Loreto "girl."

"You have the best website anywhere" - that's what I like to hear. Try telling that to the many people in and around Manchester who have never heard of Eyewitness in Manchester. We really are way behind the States here - not enough people are on the Internet. Anyhow thanks very much for your message and all the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Subject: f stop
What's f4.0
What does it mean ?

F stops refer to the degree of opening of the lens - i.e. aperture

F stops are inversely proportional to how much of the lens is open F2 would mean "half open", F4 means "a quarter open" F8 is "one eighth open". But why is F5.6 half way between F4 and F8? I'll explain that another day.

Anyhow hope that answers your question.

Would it be OK if I used images from your collection for our annual Xmas quiz (to be held initially at Hulme Adult Education college - but no doubt repeated only at drunken Xmas parties with family members...) The great views of Manchester will be excellent as a 'where is this' round... No formal reproduction will be used - just one printout of each selected picture. The college has no money in any case so please say yes...
Ta very much in anticipation...?

Yes, that's fine, please go ahead! You can download and print out pictures from the website as long as you tell me, and you have. High quality prints will be available for purchase shortly.

Just a quick line to say thank you for your efforts.I was born in Manchester (1952) but I haven't lived there since 1984, although I return for a couple of weeks every year or so. It's still nice though, to see the old place again. St. Annes Sq. looks lovely, although the "to let" signs are indicative of all not being well; the fact remains that most of Britain's wealth resides in the South-East. Having lived in Japan for the last 10 years where it is safe to walk out at night, I always have to be on guard when returning to Manchester. It seems Manchester is getting more and more dangerous.Today's Evening News' page 5 stories of violence would have been banner headlines in 1984. Anyway, thanks again. P.S How about a few pictures of Whitefield, Prestwich or Bury (I'm still a Bury FC fan!)

Thanks very much indeed. Hmmm, in City Centre Manchester these days, things are generally on the up and up - a new Hermes store is opening on King Street - more in Monday's update. It's important not to let the crime problem seem bigger than it is. In comparison to Japan, where, as in the Middle East, where I lived, street crime is virtually non-existent, Manchester isn't as safe. But in comparison to some American cities, the crime rate is much lower. Also, I had a bike stolen off the street in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and other things happened there too, so crime isn't just a Manchester thing. I remember the car crime problem being quite severe when I lived here ten years ago - I can think of several incidents involving myself and friends - nowadays it doesn't seem so bad.
Where are you in Japan and what are you doing there? I nearly went to work in Japan myself
Aidan

Dear Aidan
Thanks for your reply. I live in Osaka. I teach English in high school here and I try to do a little freelance writing. Yes, you're right about crime not being just a Manchester thing and to a certain extent crime is on the rise here too; but the fact remains that when I return to Manchester I have to switch to "on guard" mode!

By the way, I can't seem to find a Manchester radio station on the net. Key fm doesn't transmit anymore, apparently. Do you know if any other station in Manchester is on line?

My sister sends me the Monday MEN every week so I saw the article about your site. I'm going to advise my students to check out Manchesteronline and its links if they want to know about Manchester (and practice their English at the same time!) so you might become famous in Osaka too!
Keep up the good work, Eddie Estry.

I don't know of any radio station that's online at the moment

I look forward every week to your update. I am from Kearsley, but have lived in New Jersey for the last 18 years, working in Manhattan.

While I get back to Manchester about 3 times a year, and try to keep up with things British via the internet, your service is a wonderfully unique way of keeping up with the flavor of the city and its surrounds.

I particularly enjoy the photos, which I use as wallpaper on my computers. We stay at the Novotel in Worsley when we visit, so I am using the photo by the canal in Worsley on one computer, and we visited in late November and looked at the crib in the City Center that you have in this week's report, so I am using that photo on another computer.

Keep up the good work, it's fabulous.

Thanks - you've really cheered up a weary web publisher on a dark Friday afternoon in December! I'm very glad I have the pictures you want to see - Did you see Ringley Bridge, near Kearsley? Many of the locations are specifically requested by Eyewitness in Manchester readers, so please let me know of a location - street or landmark, you would like me to photograph, and I'll get round there soon. Hi Aidan , have just seen photo 627 . I am delighted this link with my past is still standing. I was a child when I last saw it and as we walked quite close to them my memory is of a towering structure. The shot from the motorway didn't register until I read the caption. After so long it takes time to realign the the memory with reality. I imagine that it still looks imposing from below. This is a marvellous site. It informs and also generates deep seated emotions. Seeing the Christmas decorations reminds me of going into Lewis's up near Piccadilly to see Christmas display. This would be pre World War 2.

Thank you and have a great Christmas and health , happiness and perhaps a little wealth in 1999

Hi Aidan,
Have been enjoying all the new pictures enormously, the ones from high up on
the Ferris wheel are amazing. I was happy to see the Blackpool shots too.
The only negative comment I might make is that on some of the pictures it is
hard to read the notation of where they are. The white print on black
background is sometimes blurry. Of course most of the time I recognize where
they are, but Manchester is changing rapidly.

By the way I noted the date of one of your pictures in the lobby of the
Midland (Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza) was taken on the same day that Jim and I
had been there for dinner, we may have passed each other and not known it. I
think I would recognise you though from the picture on line and then you would
of course have your camera.

Thanks so much for your great pictures as well as the news.
Cheerio for now,

Thanks for the message - sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I'm including text descriptions of the photos on a separate page that should make it easier for you to read them.

Hi Aidan - once again you have summoned memories . I saw
the photograph of Ringley Bridge and was immediately taken back
to 1989 . My wife and I took Mum and Dad back for a short trip to
England for a look at their old haunts . We walked across this
bridge to Ringley School and went in . Mum was able to see the
school much as it was in 1915 . She was introduced to the children
. When they found out we were from Australia all they were
interested in was the current status of The Aussie TV soapy -
Neighbours .

Sadly Dad recently passed away aged 93 but I will be able to
show Mum , now aged 90 , the photograph . It will invoke many
memories for her .

This site is a great link to our past and promotes many
memories and much discussion - greatly appreciated .

Thank you and best wishes
Arthur Hanlon

Very glad you're enjoying the pictures!

Hi !
Can we buy "Eyewitness in Manchester Image Collection" ? Is this a book or only online ?
We would like to buy a book that shows Manchester. Travel Guide or something like that.
Where can we find it ?
Med vennlig hilsen

The Eyewitness in Manchester book will be appearing some time soon, not exactly sure when. Have a look in the Manchester Online shop for more books about Manchester or try Amazon.com - do a search for Manchester.
