READER MESSAGES DECEMBER 1998 From: "michael dunne" michael@trainor-dunne.freeserve.co.uk Dear Aidan I've enjoyed your pictures and pen portraits of Manchester people on the Manchester On-line website and wondered if you had any plans to produce something on Salford-born screen star, Albert Finney. Yours Michael Dunne Beckenham Kent Hmmm, sounds like a good idea. But can I get to interview and photograph him? Ben Kingsley is another Salford-born actor. Thanks for your suggestion. Aidan Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 08:06:43 -0500 From: Dave Brennan brennan@cyberbeach.net Reply-To: brennan@cyberbeach.net To: aidan@anamaria.u-net.com Subject: Manchesteronline Hi Aidan, It is Eric from Sudbury Ontario. All the best wishes for the holiday season to you and yours. I finally found your write up in MEN today. The weather here is pretty brisk today (30 celcius below). We had a bit of snow also, now there is about a foot on the ground. What has happened to the QTVR images? I cannot access them any more. I saw from the article that you are an ex-teacher. I am also, I retired in July 1997. The teachers here are taking early retirement here by the thousand, due to much more stringent government regulations. The students are fireproof also. If they do not want to learn, the teachers get whacked! I was originally from Tripe Colony in Miles Platting. They tore that down last year I believe, to make room for some Olympic games site or other. Now I read that the Olympic movement is riddled with corruption. Ah well, nil carborundum. Is there any good news anywhere? (apart from City scoring the first goal in two months at Maine Road). I do really appreciate your work keeping the world informed about what is happening in Manchester. Take care. I'm currently re-doing the whole website, I'm creating a new page for the QTVR panoramas. I'll be doing more QTVR panoramas soon. Tripe Colony? Could you give me the name of the street? Is anyone else out there from Tripe Colony? Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 12:33:48 -0500 Hi, you asked where Tripe Colony was located. It was to the north and south of Grey Mare Lane. The north side was demolished last year, or the year before, (depends when you open this missive). There was a page on it on the internet that I accessed last year. I lived on Falmouth Street. which ran north-south, between Clifton Street and Lord North Street. The east-west streets were:- Joynson, Hanbury, Wibourne, Corelli, Helston, Wedgewood, Penworth.
When the buses used to pass through the area, most of the passengers used to mumble, in unison (pheugh!), that was an indication that we were home, so we disembarked. What was really strange was, we only used to be aware of the noxious fumes after we had been away for a couple of weeks or so. Oh by the way, we are having a hot spell right now. This morning the temperature was 26 below (celsius), but there is no wind to speak of, so it is rather pleasant at the moment. Interesting - I think I understand why you emigrated! I've been around that area and haven't noticed any noxious fumes. Very soon, work will start on the new 2002 complex, which will be located north of Grey Mare Lane Date: Sun, 27 Dec 1998 13:09:19 -0500 Hello Aidan and Ann, Graham Connor & family. Very glad you like this picture, which will soon be available for purchase as a print and /or postcard. Are there any further locations in that area you'd like to see pictures of? Worsley is one of the most photogenic parts of the Manchester area. From: firas shehadeh firas_me@yahoo.com Dear Sir.. firas_me@yahoo.com At the moment, I know of only one Manchester webcam. It's the Poolcam, which shows pictures of the new Commonwealth Games swimming pool under construction on Oxford Road It's at this URL: http://www.MiiD.net/poolcam.html. If anyone knows of any further webcams I want to know about them! Please contact me.

I've been an avid reader for a couple of years. I live in Chorlton but have been working away in London a lot and Eyewitness has been a great way to keep in touch with local news. Keep up the good work! Thanks very much indeed, glad to hear you like it! Merry Christmas From: "TULLY, JOE" joe.tully@casa.gov.au Aiden How about 113 and 180? Stadium is to be built as this will give a good indication of how things change over time. My work is in construction and I like checking out sites which show projects at various stages of development - I know there will probably be an official site but it would be nice to see what it looks like now. Who knows you may even be able to sell the stadium developers your photographers when they set up their site! Anyway keep up the good work, its good to see these familiar images

Anyway cheers again and I'll keep tuning in...
Congratulations on the article in the MEN. It's about time you received some recognition in your own country. Now the Manchester folks at home know what we out in the "colonies" have known for a long time - - you have the best web site anywhere. I first "discovered" you a couple of years ago when I worked in the Pentagon and have thoroughly enjoyed keeping up with you ever since. I was privileged to have a preview of the site when you reconstructed it earlier this year, and must say, it is just great. I was glad to see that you are now being paid for your work; whatever the MEN gives you, it isn't enough!! I can't recall the number of people I have told about Eyewitness. A friend from Raleigh is living near London and I gave him the address just this week so he can log on and find out more about Manchester. Being an American he thinks London is the ONLY place to see in England, but he will change his mind when he sees those wonderful pictures of Manchester and the surrounding area. The picture of the Whitworth Art Gallery really brought back some fond memories. My grandfather used to take us there and gave me an appreciation for art that I have to this day. He was quite a character and belonged to a group of elderly men who called themselves the "Fantails." They used to meet daily in Whitworth Park and play cards, mostly cribbage as I recall. He was definitely eccentric but a wonderful man. His older brother was Sam Ryder who began the golf competition known as the Ryder Cup. My grandfather was not as well known as Sam, except among his colleagues at the Manchester Corporation where he took care of all the clocks. Did not mean to ramble on, but I think your page tends to cause all this nostalgia, especially at this time of the year. So, thanks for many enjoyable times and have a Happy Christmas! Trish Ryder, an old Loreto "girl." "You have the best website anywhere" - that's what I like to hear. Try telling that to the many people in and around Manchester who have never heard of Eyewitness in Manchester. We really are way behind the States here - not enough people are on the Internet. Anyhow thanks very much for your message and all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1998 06:53:53 +1000 From: Terry Minshull thepom@bigfoot.com Subject: Manchester My

some old buildings still standing. I thankyou Terry Minshull Thanks very much for your message. Any places you'd like to see?
Hi I have been trying for ages to get a photograph/copy of GORTON HALL. The Hall was demolished in the 1800's. Can you give any info where I could purchase a print. TIA Gordon Shawcross, Abbotsford, B.C., Canada Hmm, I don't know, I'll keep an eye out for you - there may be a photo in a book on Gorton recently published. Leave it with me. to see the photo from Oldham with the ubiquitous McDonalds!!
The golden arches seem to show up everywhere and ruin good photo's!!!!! Hadn't sent anything to you in a while and the photo amused me. Ft Wayne (and most of the US) has been unseasonably warm so far this winter but we are supposedly looking forward to a cool down to 20 and below........Fahrenheit......wait until February.....it will be really cool then!!!! I wish you a Very Merry Christmas and exciting New Year. I get a Christmas present everytime I sign on to "Eyewitness", thanks for your dedication and time spent keeping us in touch. You could steal a phrase from the US news magazine show 20/20 "We're in touch, so you can be in touch" Thanks and keep up the great work. Rich Cook Hmm, sounds a bit too corporate and American for me! Season's Greetings and please keep visiting! Have just taken a great picture of a Sunset over Manchester, looking

Eyewitness in Manchester is a showcase for my photos, but I can include reader photos in a special section. I'll include it here for now. Anyone else got a photo they'd like to send - not too big please (max 100K), it ties up my modem!
From: "Lynda Youel" youel@tower.net.au Dear Aidan, It's that time of year again when our thoughts turn to the people who have enriched our lives. With all your hard work you have brought a great deal of pleasure to many people throughout the world and for that I would like to say a big Thank You. I would like to wish Ann and yourself a very Happy Christmas and a New Year filled with success, peace and joy. Best wishes from Lynda and Bernard Youel Thank you very much indeed for your kind message! All the very best to you too! Thanks very much indeed for your comment. I was just thinking that very thought this afternoon as I was driving past the Velodrome. I will certainly get along there soon and capture some images - maybe videoclips as well as stills. Aidan Dear Sir: Thanks for your great message - I know Heald Green very well - just
near the Airport. I'll get a photo of Heald Green for you. From: "Edward Estry" estryed@gol.com Just a quick line to say thank you for your efforts.I was born in Manchester (1952) but I haven't lived there since 1984, although I return for a couple of weeks every year or so. It's still nice though, to see the old place again. St. Annes Sq. looks lovely, although the "to let" signs are indicative of all not being well; the fact remains that most of Britain's wealth resides in the South-East. Having lived in Japan for the last 10 years where it is safe to walk out at night, I always have to be on guard when returning to Manchester. It seems Manchester is getting more and more dangerous.Today's Evening News' page 5 stories of violence would have been banner headlines in 1984. Anyway, thanks again. P.S How about a few pictures of Whitefield, Prestwich or Bury (I'm still a Bury FC fan!)
Dear Aidan By the way, I can't seem to find a Manchester radio station on the net. Key fm doesn't transmit anymore, apparently. Do you know if any other station in Manchester is on line? My sister sends me the Monday MEN every week so I saw the article
about your site. I'm going to advise my students to check out Manchesteronline
and its links if they want to know about Manchester (and practice their
English at the same time!) so you might become famous in Osaka too! I don't know of any radio station that's online at the moment

From: "Vincent Marsden" vmarsden@ladenburg.com I look forward every week to your update. I am from Kearsley, but have lived in New Jersey for the last 18 years, working in Manhattan. While I get back to Manchester about 3 times a year, and try to keep up with things British via the internet, your service is a wonderfully unique way of keeping up with the flavor of the city and its surrounds.
Keep up the good work, it's fabulous. Vince Marsden
