Have you seen the message from Gaynor Brown further down this page? And the composite of Brooklands (right)? Since 1974 Sale has been in the Borough of Trafford - part of Greater Manchester, though each of the 10 districts is independent. Sorry I don't know anything about the Castle and Falcon. I have a contact who may be able to help. He's an expert on city centre pubs. Reply-To: "Norman & Jean Buckley" <nbuck@pacificcoast.net> Hi aidan, great pictures this week love the Blackpool one, but the Clifton one brought back a few memories, of playing in the woods that was there, picking bluebells for mum, I used to work at Pilkington Tile Co, as a teenager and passed by there on the train going to Blackpool 2 years ago. Really enjoy your work look forward to reading it every week. Thanks for all the hard work you put into it. It's fun doing Eyewitness in Manchester. Glad you liked the pictures (scroll down this page to see them) From: Brit165@aol.com Dear Aiden: You asked where the "Cromar" mill is located? It's in "Boarshaw"
my spelling could be wrong. The Middleton area is about the best I can
do. Anyway Aiden, you did it again sparking those old memories with
your great photography. How do you find time to keep up with all you
do? You are amazing. Lucky for me, I've turned a hobby into a job! Even before I started doing EWM, I used to take photographs, but now I have an audience. I've got more pictures of Birkenhead coming soon. I really like Liverpool, and can't stand all this Liverpool/Manchester rivalry. I used to visit Liverpool as a child and went on the ferry too.
Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 12:52:40 -0800 Hi Aidan, SEARCH FOR - Stockport - 19 returns
Talk to you later.
The search works in the same way as an Internet search engine - it looks for a string, or word, and returns the titles of the pages on which it finds occurrences of the string in the brief text description I put on each picture page. This unsophisticated solution is enough to enable people to find the photos they want. I'm planning more sophisticated "Search and Display" facility, which will generate a thumbnail selection as above. Please e-mail me with comments and/or suggestions. Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 12:39:48 +1000 Wishing you and your family a great break of the Easter holiday. Elizabeth Thanks very much for your feedback and glad to hear the search is working OK.
Curtis Dobson Many questions, but I don't have the answers. I think Mr Prescott himself needs to answer them. Thanks very much for your approval, it is most appreciated! From: Aaron Lastoweckyi <a.lastoweckyi@staffordshire.gov.uk> I'm amazed that the Metrolink extension may now not go ahead, what's going on? I work in Staffordshire live in North Cheshire (born in north Manchester), but I am often in Manchester (I'm a Man Utd season ticket holder) and think the Metrolink system is great. This season I have been to Euro away's in two of Europe's great cities Munich and Milan. What amazed me was that both cites have an extensive Underground system and a Tram system!
Regards, Absolutely! From: "Jonathan Whitehead" <jwhitehead@iname.com> Hi Aidan With regard to your "editorial" on public transport, I agree
it's frustrating that John Prescott thinks trams are too expensive,
and congestion and polution will be improved by pushing buses. I was
under the impression though that all the planning permission and powers
are in place, and GMPTE are pushing ahead to get the extensions built
with or without money from Central Government. Obviously it would be
easier with government finance, but ever since the White Paper on transport
was published last year, that prospect has looked exceedingly unlikely.
"Integrated day tickets" have recently been introduced for
Greater Manchester, but with all the operators needing to make a profit
the prices and conditions aren't very appealing. £3 for a Daysaver
valid on all buses all day. Tickets incorporating trams and trains are
only valid after 9.30 unfortunately: £3.50 for bus and train,
£5 for bus and Metrolink, £7 for all three. Further info
from the excellent revamped GMPTE site http://www.gmpte.gov.uk,
and of course from my page, http://www.lrta.org/metrolink.html. As for reinstating disused railway lines, prospects for the Fairfield
Loop Line must be virtually dead with the construction of the new Sainsbury's
(above) at Fallowfield (the supermarket and carpark are on top
of the trackbed) and housing to the east of Ladybarn Lane. The manager
at Sainsbury's certainly didn't seem aware of any clause to allow future
reinstatement of the line. However the supermarket has evidently been
built to allow for future conversion of the line to a cycle/pedestrian
way. And as you may know parliamentary powers exist to convert the Chorlton
to Didsbury railway line to light rail. GMPTE's only information on
this one for Do you know of any more potentially useful disused railways? I think
the worst problem for rail transport in Manchester is that there are
only 2 through-train platforms at Piccadilly station (and two tracks
between here and Deansgate), seriously limiting the rail traffic through
the city. Presumably if there were easy solutions to this, someone would have thought of them by now. Metrolink clearly provides a way forward for increasing "through" rail traffic. Anyway, you've obviously got me off on MY hobby-horse! I should stop now... Cheers Thanks for your thoughts. When I was a child and visited London, I loved the Underground, and wished we had one in Manchester. In the seventies, the "Picc-Vic" underground was planned, but cancelled for lack of money. Other disused lines include Glazebrook to Partington (across the Ship Canal), Cheadle Heath to Reddish via Tiviot Dale, Marple to Macclesfield (Middlewood Way), Clifton Junction to Radcliffe (over the nine arches) Eccles to Worsley and Tyldesley. Yes, I'm going to introduce a search on the Newsletter.
Subject: Airport camera Aidan, What about a live, continuous video on this site, from a vantage point
high above Ringway, capturing all the comings and goings from around
the world?.......I for one would call in regularly! What do you think?
Too pricey? Kind regards, and keep up the good work! Tony Sounds like a great idea, but setting up a webcam like this would be the responsibility of the Airport. It would look great on their website. Personally, I'd like to set up an Eyewitness in Manchester city centre webcam. Currently lookoing for a hardware/software package which could be used. Please e-mail me with suggestions/information. From: "Daniel Birchall" <danibirc@rph.health.wa.gov.au>
Dear Aidan You may recall our e-mail correspondence a few months ago regarding
possible purchase of prints. I'm sorry that it's taken several months
to get back to you, but first of all I was temporarily seconded to a
remote town in the country, and soon after my return my wife had a baby! I'm very interested in many of your photos, but I guess the one that
stands out to me is one of the Metro in St. Peter's Square (right)
(it's reproduced in this week's Eye Witness, which incidentally is extremely
good). The picture stands out for me because of the contrast of the
lights with the dusk sky, the rain on the cobbles, the tram. It is quintessential
Manchester! How much would it cost to obtain a print? I still have a bank account in England if that makes payment easier. Looking forward to hearing from you. Daniel Birchall I can supply an A4 high quality inkjet print at £10, plus post and packaging. Alternatively, for £5, I can supply a high resolution digital file and you can download it and print it yourself, or at your local print shop. From: "C & J Vandersluys" <cjv@senet.com.au> yes I would be very interested in your book. well done aidan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your Image collection is wonderful. I've visited it several times already.
Since finding your site 3 months ago, I'm addicted. It's like getting
a letter from home every week, except yours comes with pix each time.
Many thanks for the Brooklands photos. I was born in Manchester (St.
Mary's Hospital, Whitworth St), lived in Salford 'til I was six, but
raised in Sale. Went to Sale Girls Grammar on Marsland Road, not far from Brooklands
Station. It brought back many memories of running to catch the bloody
train to Oxford Road station to go out for the night at Takis. Had to
be home for 11 pm though. Doesn't that date me??? Keep us informed on the progress of the book - remember us ex-pats
need time to receive them and then get them out to our nearest and dearest. Best regards and happy Easter from an increasingly warm and humid New
Orleans, and keep up the good work. Gaynor Brown Thanks for your comments. I'm making slow progress on the book - There's a lot of work involved, and I have many commitments. Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 22:57:54 -0800 Hi Adian, Yes, I would buy the above named book. I can't thank you enough for the pleasure you have given my family and I with the messages and outstanding pictures on your site, especially the ones you took of Clayton that I requested, thank-you for going out of your way to do this. We emigrated to Canada from Clayton in 1971, therefore we love reading
up on all the news and seeing the changes, which you have made possible,
also the many relatives and friends we have found on your site,
keep up the good work. Sheila Thompson (Nee Hall) I enjoy getting round the city and taking images people ask for, though I can't satisfy all requests immediately. I'm very glad to hear you've found friends and relatives via Manchester Online and Eyewitness in Manchester. Here's another picture - of Cross Parish Church, Clayton. Please keep visiting. From: "Thornton, Frank" <ThorntF@NAVCANADA.CA> Really appreciated your photograph of Salford Royal Hospital. My dear
departed wife and I, did some of our courting while she was a nurse
at that hospital (Margaret O'Reilly her maiden name) Meeting by the adjacent church to go off on dates. Dances in the X-Ray department, with lighting so dim, you had be careful where you walked.!!! My sister started nursing training there, but quit after a few months
only. Serving hot chocolate to a "stiffie" (dead person) at
night was not her cup of tea. Will be spending some time in Salford this
Summer. Blackpool, the Lakes and the IOM is on my hit list. Maybe Hayfield
and the Snake Pass as well. Enjoy the most memorable day of the year,
Easter Suday, Satan's defeatand the Resurrection of Jesus. Cheers
I passed Salford Royal Hospital yesterday - looking closer I realise now that the right hand side was completely rebuilt following the attack in the Blitz, and not to the standard of the original. I also noticed the plaque, which is to be retained if the hospital is turned into apartments or offices. Anyhow, here's one of Blackpool promenade, taken with the panoramic camera.
