Hello Aidan I have used the search engines a couple of times and have not run into any problems so far.

Two of the photographs in this weeks newsletter have brought back many memories for me. I used to work in Parsonage Gardens - many moons ago - and I had my wedding reception in a pub in Alkrington - also many moons ago. Thanks for the memories. Best wishes Lynda

Ann used to work in Parsonage Gardens - in the building in the top left. Seems strange that soon people will be living there. A friend of hers lives in Alkrington - nice place. Did you see my Alkrington waterfowl & houses picture (right?

Subject: Parsonage Gardens - Arkwright House? - downtown changes.
Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 00:13:25 -0400

This week you showed the building 'behind Kendall Milnes'. In the early 50s my father worked at Arkwright House (English Sewing Cotton) - is this adjacent to Parsonage Gardens or was Arkwright House renamed?

Great photo of Fairfield St. - not that I can truthfully say I can recognise anything.

The searches are so smooth - what can we say, but thank you!

Arkwright House is the big white building with neo-classical columns on the left hand side of Parsonage Gardens as you come from Deansgate. At lunchtime, I often go to Henry's, a cafe-bar on the ground floor. The exterior of Arkwright House has just been cleaned, it looks very impressive. I'll do a photo of it soon.

Thanks Aidan for the wonderful 'Manchester on Line' issues, I have printed them to keep the images of the fields of daffodils fresh in my memory. After our visit three years ago in April, I have many photos of daffodils, my neighbour in Aust. had told me 'how the daffodils in England grow' but nothing prepared me for the beauty of them, everywhere! Hope to return to Manchester one day, for now I will keep up my visits via you. Thank you Joyce. K.

Glad to hear you like the daffodils - they don't last long, so I like to capture them in my photos. More flowers coming soon.

Dear Aidan

Hope you had a wonderful holiday, Easter in Panama just isn't the same! Pleased to see you visited Tandle Hill Park during your visit to Royton to record the demise of the Elk Mill, the new landscape will certainly make a big change to the surrounding views. Judging from your comments I guess the weather wasn't so good but I still enjoyed the panoramic view over Oldham, many of the landmarks are quite familiar. I think Boundary Park football ground is just visible at centre right hand side.

Your pictures really are quite remarkable, I have a passing interest in photography and often try to email images of Panama to interested friends at home but the quality and brilliance never seem quite so good as yours. How about revealing some of your tips? I've visited your home page and it looks like you may be planning something in the future but I'd love to know about your equipment, film types and formatting tips for email or web page transmission. In the meantime I'll keep on experimenting and enclose one of my recent photographs of our local Church here in Panama, (Scanned from print in JPEG format) Very best wishes, Brian Oakley

I have an idea for a website/book project on "Secrets of Successful Web Photography" but there are only so many hours in the day and I don't have enough of them. I can tell you two secrets now: 1) Only scan from negatives. 2) Use Adobe Photoshop. I also think that the Macintosh is a better platform to work on for images, but that's just a personal preference of mine.

Hello how are you . This is my first time on this site and being a Manchester lad born and bred it really excited me to see a Manchester web site. On the postcard of the canal area that has had so much renovation done to it, I would like to add something interesting. I was a Manchester police officer from 1959-1970 when I left and went to America, I was also a Sheriffs deputy here. Anyway my beat covered Deansgate and the top area Castlefield in and around the canals.

In those days the area was a stinking dirty rat infested (and not just animals) area, that was crime infested and was home to a varying amount of human garbage, to be quite honest, even me would not go down there unless accompanied by half the shift. So imagine my surprise when on a visit in 1996 a friend took me down there, where to my amazement and profound joy in the city planners I came upon one of the most trendiest places I have seen in Manchester. The two pubs, the foot bridges, the cobbles and to my amazement, the pike I saw surface for a sec in the canal.

I was proud of Manchester when I lived there and I am more proud of it now when I see all that has been done all over the city to make it look so clean and sparkling. Thanks for this home page, it does really make me feel at "home"

Well you answered my question without replying. I found a letter I had sent looking for some old school mates in todays M/CR online, thanks for being so quick! A favour, do you have any pictures of the Queens road depot, Barneys Field. My Dad worked for the M.C.T.D. for 40 yrs, seved his country in both WW1 and WW2, and was awarded the MBE in Queen Elizabeths first honours list.

In 1954. I used to play on Barneys field, which was at the bottom of our Street, Lecester Road, Know it? And me and my pals used to collect Train #s down at the sidings on the other side of Barneys. Me and my friends also witnessed a bad train crash down there, I was quite young and I think it was about 1952-54, I could be wrong on those dates, but it was definitely before 54.

Thanks Ray O'Neill. Boy this web site is great, keep it up.

Oh to help you more, the depot was on Queens Road and Lecester road was 3 streets down from there.

Queens Rd depot is now used as a bus depot by FirstBus Manchester. The top end of the depot, on Boyle St is the Museum of Transport. I see Lecester Rd on the map, but there's no sign of Barney's Field. On the map, there's Smedley Fields Recreation Ground is that it? The railway line runs along one side. That line is now used by Metrolink trams. Woodlands Rd is the next station up. I'll be taking some more pictures in that area soon. Oh by the way, please reply to: a i d a n (with an A!)

Aidan
Just a quick reply to advise you that YES Coronation Street is VERY big in Canada. In Toronto you can see it every day on Cable TV. It is fairly up to date too.

Keep up the great work on the Newsletter, Images and all.

Will you be posting any more photos of the St George's Day parade??

Rob

(Ex-Chorlton BIG MAN UTD SUPPORTER.)

Thanks, and yes, here you are, as you requested, plus the postcard I made on the day of the parade using shots from the the Kodak DC20 digital camera. It's interesting to compare the colour and picture quality.

Dear Aiden -
Yes, it's true. Canada gets 'Coronation Street' (not to mention M&S on the high street), whilst we expats in the USA are denied our fix. We do occassionally get 'Eastenders' (at about midnight), 'Red Dwarf' (11:30 on a Sunday night), & various whodunnits on PBS (Public Broadcasting Stations, which are totally reliant on public donations); the 'A&E' channel also shows series such as 'Inspector Morse', 'Poirot', & 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', but they're usually old repeats, & rarely shown in order.

All the best
Karen Abbott

Even though I don't always watch them, I appreciate very much quality home produced drama on TV. Here's one of Granada TV, Quay St Manchester, where some of those quality programmes originate.
