MANCHESTER SKYSCRAPER PROPOSED
PLANS FOR A MANCHESTER SKYSCRAPER, an extension to Sunlight House, Quay Street, are to be presented to the Draft Schemes Sub-Committee. It will be twice the height of the present building, and will be built between Sunlight House and the Opera House. It will be surmounted with a large clock tower. The £1m, 35-storey, 360ft building has been designed by Mr Joseph Sunlight.

1000 TONS OF SOOT FALLING ON SALFORD
ALDERMAN W.W. CRABTREE told a meeting of Salford's coal merchants that 1000 tons of soot fall on Salford each year. This is equivalent to a 1 inch covering on the streets. It will take 20 to 30 years to rid the city of this "nuisance", he said.

CO-OP SAFES STOLEN IN MOTTRAM AND CHEADLE HULME
THIEVES STOLE A 2 CWT SAFE FROM the Co-op Store in Broadbottom on Monday. Using a car stolen in Mottram Rd Hyde (Cheshire), they took it to a deserted roadside, forced open the door and took £150 in notes and silver.

And in another incident later in the week, thieves raided the Co-op at Cheadle Rd, Cheadle Hulme. They drove off in a powerful car, but Police Constable Wilfrid Hope jumped in and forced the car to crash. The safe, containing £100 and food documents, fell off the back of the car. The thieves escaped.

MANCHESTER HAIRDRESSERS ANNOUNCE NEW STYLES
THE MANCHESTER AMALGAMATED HAIRDRESSERS SOCIETY have decided upon names for hairstyles, which will be displayed with photos.
The Manchester: Short back and sides, fairly long on top, hair line invisible.
The Arcade: Short back not too short sides, fairly short at the front, flat dressing.
The Regent: Fashioned into a V-shape at the back with sides fairly full, pretty short on top and brushed flat.
The Argent: Fairly long on top with long sides raised into a wing.

BRITAIN'S NEW RAILWAY QUEEN CROWNED AT A CEREMONY HELD AT BELLE VUE this afternoon, Beryl Parker (15) of Hull was crowned as Britain's new Railway Queen. 28 special trains and 100 coaches brought British Railway employees from all over the country for the event.
