Food intolerance

FOOD intolerance is being blamed for causing a raft of illnesses and making many more conditions much worse.

The prime culprit seems to be gluten, the protein found in wheat - a big problem for a society which lunches on sandwiches.

Sufferers from coeliac disease - a dietary disease of the small intestine - are allergic to gluten and the only treatment is a totally gluten free diet. But recent research has shown that autistic patients and multiple sclerosis sufferers may also show marked improvements when gluten is removed from their diet.

The modern phenomena of irritable bowel syndrome may be caused by an intolerance to wheat, preservatives or processed foods. Sufferers should try cutting out ready-made meals and wheat, which basically means no butties and no pasta. Gluten free foods are available in some supermarkets and health food shops.
