Arthritis
HOPE is on the horizon for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers with news of a safe
and effective cure for the crippling disease which affects more than 750,000 people
in the UK.
Scientists have identified drugs already available that, with a single treatment,
target the white blood cells, known as B-cells, which in sufferers produce errant
antibodies that attack healthy joints and tissue. In a test on 20 people only
two failed to have any benefit.
But long term trials are needed before the treatment will be generally available
- probably not before 2002.
