Cancer - Genetics

GENE therapy is now being used to treat some cancer patients at the Christie Hospital in Manchester.

The vaccine is made from a protein which disguises cancer cells and hides them from the body's defence system.

Injected into a muscle, it triggers the immune system into destroying this ''copy'' protein. The aim is to teach the immune system to recognise the cancer protein whenever it occurs, and destroy it.

Such treatments promise more efficient, kinder treatments than chemotherapy for low-grade lymphoma - cancer which attacks the immune system.
