Hypothermia

HYPOTHERMIA is an isidious condition. It creeps along slowly with the body getting colder so gradually that the person, generally elderly, does not realise.

As body temperature declines it begins to shut systems down. The person will eventually lose consciousness and, if not found and helped, they will die.

Prolonged exposure to low temperatures affects the elderly in particular and the winter cold is said to claim the lives of 30,000 people a year in the UK, more than 7,000 of them in the North West.

Constantly living in a room or house that is cold substantially increases the likelihood of ill-health.

But many people do not realise just how cold they are becoming.
