Keep the burglars at bay

EVERY 32 seconds someone's home is burgled, costing the average victim £1,883 per burglary. It is a fact that one third of all burglars break in through unlocked windows and doors which is why home security is high on the agenda when householders install new ones.

According to new research by Anglian Home Improvements, burglary is one of the offences most feared by the public, with less than 10% of us feeling safe in our own homes at all times.

When asked what item would you most hate to lose through a burglary, 56% of people in Manchester said family mementoes while 31% in the south west said family photographs and 21% of people on the south coast said the home computer.

Alarms fitted in a property can make a burglar think twice and it is always best to seek specialist advice.

Conservatories should be fitted with the same standard of locks as the main house and should be connected to the house alarm system.

Doors ideally need to be fitted with a multi-point locking system. Fit a strong, lockable gate across side passages which surround your property.

Make it difficult for a burglar, use a timer switch and leave a radio on while you are out.
