Best conversion: Meal House Brow, Stockport

A PAINSTAKING refurbishment of a listed building right in the heart of the town.

Designed by TADW architects, the team expertly restored and reused 18th century timber, paving and brickwork to create 20 rental apartments and seven retail units.

The internal courtyards are overlooked by smaller windows, which provide some security as well as privacy.

From the outside, the timber shop fronts and traditional sash windows have been made locally, and the developers have salvaged Welsh slate to roof all the street frontages.

This is a great example of what can be done on a small scale to help regeneration and put some life back into a town.
