Go green in Clayton

GREEN: Eco homes
GREEN: Eco homes
A GEORGIAN-style park surrounded by contemporary eco-homes is being planned for Clayton in east Manchester.

The idea is that it mimics the sought after residential areas around London, creating a safe place for local residents to relax.

The park will be in the second phase of major plans to revamp Clayton which will bring 400 new homes alongside the Ashton Canal. Work starts this autumn on the first phase which is made up of 84 houses and 50 apartments.

The emphasis is on energy efficiency with wind generators and solar panels built onto the roof to generate power.

The scheme has been designed by Manchester based architects MBLA who have included high levels of insulation and big windows to maximise light.

The redevelopment is part of the wider regeneration of east Manchester and chief executive of NEM, Tom Russell, said: “Phase one has been designed to reflect the wishes of the existing residents.”

Flexibility

There was a strong preference for the use of brick, large windows and flexibility and potential of design which has been achieved. The designs also incorporate pleasingly high environmental standards meaning the properties will have the benefits and comfort of a modern, energy efficient cost effective home.

The scheme also benefits from lots of open public space, secure play areas for children and a tram stop which will be part of the Ashton extension.”

They are going out of the way to make Clayton a greener place, planting a wildflower meadow and hedges of hawthorn, holly and willow and will improve the canalside walkway with the aim of making it more country lane than urban pavement.

Bob Millar is from the developers New City Vision who will be working with British Waterways to make it happen and he said: “The new development will provide a pleasant green and secure environment for residents with easy access to the city centre.

“We know the high quality, sustainable homes will raised the profile of the area as a desirable and attractive place to live.”

They have done a lot of consultation with the community of Eccleshall Street and listened to their desperate need to give the kids something to do and places to go.

As a result they will also create a children’s play area at one end for the little tots and an all-weather surface playing service near to the station for the teenagers.
