WHERE: Between Stockport and Macclesfield in the Cheshire boundary. Ten miles south of Manchester city centre. The town nestles in the valleys of the River Dean and the River Bollin and is surrounded by beautiful countryside and fields. The airport is three miles away. Houses regularly sell for more than £1m.

WHY: A traditional old mill town which is now a haunt of the rich and famous. Affulence abounds and the town is full of exclusive boutiques and chic bars and restaurants, however it still manages to retain a feeling of community spirit.

WHO: Home to a number of Manchester United footballers (including the team's manager Sir Alex Ferguson) and soap stars. Also made famous by Neil and Christine Hamilton and before them, Alan Turing who helped develop one of the early computers used for code breaking in the Second World War.

SCHOOLS: Several good primary schools. Alderley Edge School for Girls is just over a mile away plus the Kings School is less than six miles away. Both are highly regarded independent fee-paying schools. Wilmslow High School is the local state secondary school.

AGENT'S VIEW: "Wilmslow is one of the most expensive places in the north west. It is so red-hot that it's almost nationally renowned. Along with Alderley Edge it's part of a golden triangle of very expensive properties," said Crispin Harris.
"It's strategically placed with its own station, great motorway access and Manchester Airport close by.
"I think the market will remain very optimistic - we have an enormous number of sales of £500,000 or more."
