Spotlight on Stretford

WHERE: Manchester United fans are unlikely to need directions. Just a few miles south of Manchester city centre, Stretford overlooks the Theatre of Dreams and is easy to reach off junction 7 of the M60 or straight down the A56 from the city.

WHY: The majority of people who used to buy in Stretford were born there. Now, as house prices have rocketed in surrounding areas such as Sale, more people are looking at it as a more affordable alternative.

With three-bed semis aplenty and several good schools - including grammar and private schools - in the area is hugely popular with families. Also, the prices have recently attracted more and more first time buyers. For instance, a two-bed terrace house here costs around £80,000 - compared to around £120,000 in Didsbury.

Sports fans will have it made being just a walk away from Old Trafford cricket and football grounds.

And, according to a recent survey, house prices next to these particular sporting meccas have been enjoying a healthy price rise lately.

TRANSPORT: Transport links are good with Manchester city centre just 15 minutes away by car. Alternatively you could choose from a short journey by bus, train or Metrolink.

AGENT'S VIEW: Stephen Groves from Bridgfords said: "Because it is near Trafford Park, Stretford used to be quite working class but as other areas have got more expensive more and more people are coming here because it is still affordable.

"It has got great amenities and schools. Plus it is still in the catchment area for some schools in Urmston, which is a more expensive area. There are also great transport links with the Metrolink and the motorway.

"Old Trafford cricket ground and Manchester United are just a few minutes away, as well as one of the biggest hospitals in the area with Trafford General. The Trafford Centre has also brought the prices up a lot.

"It's quite a family-based area but we have got a lot of first-time buyers as well. Prices have risen sharply since the Trafford Centre opened but they haven't really moved since the beginning of the year.

"There are some professional people starting to move here because prices in town are so much higher."
