DELTA Air Lines has re-launched daily flights between Manchester and New York, hoping the weak US dollar will lure business and leisure travellers.
The carrier scrapped its service between the north west and John F Kennedy Airport in 2000 following a downturn in the American economy.
Its revival brings Delta into competition with British Airways and Continental Airlines and means there are now four direct daily flights to the Big Apple.
Delta's flight leave Manchester at 10.30am, arriving at 1.15pm. The return flight leaves New York at 8.30pm, arriving back at Manchester at 8.30am the following day.
Convenience
Lore Neuenschwander, Delta's managing director for the Atlantic region, said: "The new flight will bring added convenience and travel options for both business and leisure passengers in the Manchester area.
"Passengers will be able to connect to more than 84 flights a day to 40 cities in America and beyond, particularly key business destinations such as Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and popular leisure destinations such as Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas.
"Manchester is an extremely important market for Delta and this route will be a great addition to our existing daily service to Atlanta."
Armin Venenci, Delta's UK sales manager, said: "It's a perfect time to head to the US as the depreciating value of the dollar offers excellent value for money for our UK customers travelling to America on holiday or for business."
Tim McDermott, Manchester Airport's aviation development director, said: "With four direct flights a day from Manchester to New York, getting to the Big "Apple has never been easier. The onward connections from JFK and Newark also mean there's nowhere in the US that's out of reach for north west travellers.
"And it's not just new services we're celebrating. BA's flat-beds in their Club World cabin have been really popular with passengers looking to arrive home refreshed after a good night's sleep.
"Pakistan International Airlines also now offer services to New York through Manchester from Islamabad."
