Iceland direct from Manchester
FLIGHTS to the Icelandic capital Reykjavik are to be launched from Manchester. Icelandair will start twice-weekly services next April, using a Boeing 757 with 167 economy class and 22 business class seats.
Flights will operate on Fridays and Mondays. Return fares are expected to start from £102 plus tax.
Stephen Brown, the airline's UK general manager, said: "We are seeing increasingly strong bookings from northern England and the Midlands for our services from Heathrow and Glasgow, and we have realised the need for an additional gateway. We have seen a gap in the market and felt that Manchester has enormous potential for additional traffic in both directions, among business people and leisure trav- ellers alike."
Tim McDermott, aviation development director at Manchester, said: "We think Icelandair will prove to be a popular addition to Manchester. "Reykjavik is an exciting destination and we're sure travellers from the north west will be making the most of the twice- weekly flights.
"We hope too that many Icelanders will take the chance to come to Manchester to explore the region."

* GERMAN low-cost carrier Hapag-Lloyd Express is launching flights between Manchester and Hanover. It will operate five departures a week from March 26. The carrier already flies to Cologne and Stuttgart.
