More bites at the Big Apple

CONTINENTAL Airlines is introducing a second daily flight from Manchester to New York in response to growing demand from tourists and business travellers.

The world's sixth-largest airline will launch the additional service to Newark in June and will become the first carrier to offer double-daily flights across the Atlantic.

At present, it uses a Boeing 767 or 777 on the route, providing between 235 and 283 seats. From June 10, it will operate two Boeing 757 jets with a total of 344 seats a day. Each 172-seater aircraft will carry 16 BusinessFirst and 156 economy class passengers.

Bob Schumacher, Continental's senior director in the UK and Ireland, said: "By doubling the frequency of our Manchester flights and providing more seats, we will be able to offer transAtlantic travellers in the north west greater choice and flexibility than ever before.

"Our customers will be able to choose between a mid-morning and early-afternoon departure from Manchester, and an even greater range of connecting flights from our New York hub."

Network

The new schedule will see daily departures from Manchester at 9.30am and 1.30pm, arriving in the Big Apple at 12.05pm and 4.05pm respectively. Departures from Newark will be at 7.45pm and 10pm, arriving in Manchester at 7.40am and 9.55am the following day.

The flights will connect with Continental's network of services throughout the US, Canada and Latin America. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of Continental's Manchester flights.

Demand for seats is particularly high at present, thanks to the weak dollar and strong pound.

Manchester Airport managing director John Spooner said: "We are committed to developing our route network and are delighted that Continental Airlines have chosen to expand their operation at Manchester.

"New York and the USA have been selling extremely well, especially given the exchange rate with the dollar. This new service will complement a really strong network of flights to North America."
