Online shopping is all the rage

ONLINE shoppers in Manchester are the biggest spenders on the web, snapping up everything from balloon trips to pole-dancing poles!

A study by web firm SciVisum found that, despite a willingness among Mancunians to splash big bucks on cars and houses online, they are also more prone to `web rage' than their southern counterparts.

SciVisum said that 78 per cent of shoppers complain that frustration with a website's performance has led them to turn off their computer. It claims that `web rage' is now threatening the UK's online economy.

The most common factor for such frustration is the inability to ask questions over the phone, followed by the website crashing during a transaction. The research found that northerners are most prone to `web rage', with a quarter declaring they would never return to their favourite site again if performance was bad, compared with six per cent elsewhere in the country.

Phenomenon

SciVisum chief executive officer Deri Jones, said: "Web rage is a burgeoning online phenomenon. With fewer than half of online shoppers prepared to give their favourite website more than two chances to get it right, the message to eTailers is very clear.

"Online shoppers are showing zero tolerance to poor performance and eTailers must follow this lead if they are to avoid losing their customers to high street competitors." Almost three quarters of UK consumers now shop online, with an average spend of £89 per month. One in five people living in the north west admitted they would splash out £5,000 or more on a single purchase, closely followed by Scots and Londoners.

However, their counterparts in the south west and south east said they absolutely never would.

One in ten people in the north west claimed to buy houses online. The Scots are most likely to buy cars, with 14 per cent buying them online.

Among the most extraordinary purchases made online by people living in Manchester include a balloon trip, a pole dancing pole and a Captain Pugwash doll!
