Wayne a PFA Winner

WAYNE Rooney was last night honoured by his fellow professionals as he won the PFA Young Player of the Year award. The Manchester United striker, who has hit 19 goals for his club and two for his country this season, was named the winner at a glitzy dinner at London's Grosvenor Hotel.

Rooney beat his Reds team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo to the award - voted for by the nation's pro players - with Arsenal teenager Cesc Fabregas, Charlton striker Darren Bent, West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand and Tottenham midfielder Aaron Lennon also making the six-man shortlist.

PFA chief Gordon Taylor said: "Wayne Rooney's development under Sir Alex Ferguson has been great to see."

Rooney was also shortlisted for the PFA's main Player of the Year award, but lost out to Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool captain Gerrard also pipped Chelsea trio John Terry, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard to win the main award, as well as Arsenal's Thierry Henry.
