Haggle for That New Car and Save

CAR buyers could save an average of more than £1,350 if they are prepared to haggle over the price of their new motor.

In total, purchasers could make savings of more than £587 million if they followed various buying rules, said What Car? magazine.

It added that the average saving on a car is currently £1,354 and consumers could get even more off the price if they tried.

Buyers should haggle, shop around for finance deals, and also look at how much they are getting for their old car.

What Car? also said that buyers should be prepared to walk away if the deal was not right.
Editor David Motton said: "Salesmen will sometimes try to persuade you that a cashback deal or interest-free finance package puts an end to haggling. Don't believe a word of it.

"These buying incentives are almost always paid for by the manufacturer, so the dealer still has a profit margin to play with. You can - and should - keep on haggling."

He went on: "New car sales, especially to private buyers, are well down this year. It's a buyer's market. The salesman needs you more than you need them. There are plenty of other dealers ready to cut the price if your local dealer won't."
