THEN: Devastation in Corporation Street
AMONG the ruins left by the IRA bomb that ripped apart the centre of Manchester stood an undamaged red pillar box. It became an iconic image.

The box was unmoved and has come to symbolise the spirit of the city.

However, a £550m rebuilding programme has helped create a vibrant, modern shopping area that stands as a striking symbol of the renaissance of Manchester.

And the post box is still there, modestly hiding away on the pavement, but bearing a plaque which records its place in history.

The archive photograph is part of a collection showing Manchester in the past 250 years at Central Library.
