Then and Now: The Manchester bomb
Brian Lashley THEN: Devastation in Corporation Street AMONG the ruins left by the IRA bomb that ripped apart the centre of Manchester stood an undamaged red pillar box. It became an iconic image.Eight years ago on a sunny Saturday during Euro 96, the pillar box took the full force of a 3,300lb bomb in a lorry outside the Marks and Spencer store on Corporation Street. The box was unmoved and has come to symbolise the spirit of the city. Remarkably no one was killed in the blast on Saturday, June 15, 1996. But the damage was devastating. NOW: The area has been rebuilt However, a £550m rebuilding programme has helped create a vibrant, modern shopping area that stands as a striking symbol of the renaissance of Manchester. And the post box is still there, modestly hiding away on the pavement, but bearing a plaque which records its place in history. The archive photograph is part of a collection showing Manchester in the past 250 years at Central Library.
