Then and Now: Newton Heath
Carl Palmer  THEN: The Duke of York pubThis unexpected product of the area began in 1879 as a team formed by workers on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, who played on a pitch in nearby Monsall Road. Newton Heath Football Club was admitted to the Football League and in 1902 moved to new premises in Bank Street, changing the club name to Manchester United.  NOW: A community centre has replaced the pubThe components of Blackpool Tower were made in the area. Today, the spot where the free house Duke of York Hotel used to stand, on Old Church Street, is occupied by the Newton Heath Health Centre. The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Manchester Central Library.
