Then and Now: Corporation Street

MANCHESTER boasts some of the best examples of architecture in the north west, such as the area around Corporation Street in the city centre.

This combines the best of the old and the new, with a wealth of striking modern buildings sitting alongside historic architectural gems.

The Co-operative Wholesale Society offices were built in Corporation Street in 1905.

Now their imposing baroque style lends an air of faded grandeur to the thoroughfare.

Sadly, the modern photo above shows that the domes and columns on the furthest building have disappeared.

And the other baroque building was demolished to make way for the brick-built Co-op Bank that opened in , 1975.

Parkers Hotel, a Grade 2 listed building, which can be seen in the bottom left of both photos, was originally offices of the Co-operative Insurance Society in 1906.

This Edwardian baroque building retains its splendid copper dome and is complemented by a curved frontage.

Now planning permission has been granted to AEW Architects to add an extension to convert it into flats.

Meanwhile, a fabulous example of 1960s architecture can be seen in the new CIS headquarters at the junction of Corporation Street and Miller Street.

The CIS tower, with its glass, aluminium and black steel exterior, remains the tallest building in Manchester at 118 metres.

The contemporary exhibition centre Urbis now stands at the corner of Todd Street - where the current photo was taken.

Semi-transparent glass coats the contours of the building, adding a shimmering appearance to the urban landscape.

The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Manchester Central Library.

What are your memories of Corporation Street and the surrounding area.
