Then and Now: The Wellington Hotel

THEN: The hotel before it was demolished
THEN: The hotel before it was demolished
THE Wellington Hotel in the heart of the city was demolished to make way for the Arndale Centre - and helped change the outlook of the "shopping village" forever.

Sadly, the transformation from period watering hole to Manchester city-centre development delivered a lot less than it promised in the looks department.

In fact, early descriptions of what was widely considered an architectural disaster varied from "the biggest lavatory wall in Europe" to "a yellow-tiled monster".

The multi-million-pound scheme was part of a 13-acre site, running back from Market Street to Cannon Street and through to Withy Grove and Shudehill.

NOW: A more modern look
NOW: A more modern look
Even a new-technology car park attached to the sprawling shopping centre - only the second of its kind in Britain when built in 1979 - had its detractors after once mistakenly issuing a £66.75 exit ticket to a motorist who had parked for only an hour.

The Wellington Hotel at Nicholas Croft - not to be confused with the old Wellington Inn damaged by an IRA bomb in 1996 and rebuilt 200 yards away - had for decades been a magnet for traders eager to slake their thirst after a hard day's work.

Today, the same location that once attracted classic cars of the day like the Austin A30 and Ford Popular is home to a multi-storey car park.

The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Manchester Central Library.

What are your memories of the Wellington and the surrounding area? Have your say.
