Then and Now: The Wheatsheaf, Levenshulme

SOUTH Manchester's Wheatsheaf Hotel has done well to survive the ravages of time.

Situated at the junction between Broom Lane and Stockport Road in Levenshulme, the imposing pub structure is as good an example as any of the changing face of the area through regeneration.

The mills and factories that were once a prominent feature of this south Manchester district have all but disappeared, and in their place today is a lively and proud community feeding on the benefits of a multi-million-pound regeneration programme.

It has brought renewed vigour to the vital Stockport Road corridor and reversed its decline.

Old Levenshulme is remembered fondly by many for the number of its cinemas.

The Arcadia and Palace were locally known as the "bug huts", and one was so close to the railway that when a train passed you couldn't hear the film.

The Regal was a plush picture palace, and, just to show rowdy behaviour is no modern phenomena, the Kingsway was smashed up by the over-excited audience watching Rock Around The Clock.

But times change and names come and go. The Arcadia became a cash-and-carry and the Grand cinema a furniture store.

The archive photo is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Manchester Central Library.

What are your memories of the Wheatsheaf and the surrounding area? Have your say.
