Then and Now: Dickenson Road, Longsight
Carl Palmer  THEN: Dickenson Road in 1962A short distance from the city centre, Longsight has seen enormous changes over the last 150 years and can be proud of its links with Manchester's historic past.
From the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens, opened in 1836, to the pioneering Birmingham & Manchester Railway Company constructed in the Longsight area, the district is a beacon of corporate planning and enterprise. No more so than at Longsight Market, renowned for its old-world charm and the wide range of quality products.  NOW: A major route from the city centreThe heavy traffic in the modern picture at the junction shared by Stockport Road, Stanley Grove and Dickenson Road, is a major route from the city centre to south Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Manchester Central Library.
