Then and Now: Clayton
Martin Dillon  THEN: North Road, Clayton in 1907The empty fields of 1907 were replaced as the century wore on, with the houses seen today in North Road, Clayton.
Mining, chemical, textile, steel and engineering businesses were based in the area, providing work for many of the people living in the new homes nearby. Sadly, many of these firms closed during the economic recession of the 1970s and 1980s, leaving thousands without work.  NOW: Houses have replaced the fieldsHundreds of new homes are being built and large businesses are being attracted to the region once again. The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the city's changing face on a computer at Manchester Central Library.
