Then and Now: Deansgate

THEN: Deansgate in 1895
THEN: Deansgate in 1895
THE dramatic transformation of Manchester city centre is graphically illustrated in the latest photographs from our Then and Now series.

Horse drawn trams wind their way in front of the imposing Victoria Buildings in Deansgate, an office, shopping and hotel complex opened in the 1880s.

One of the trams is carrying an advert for soap from the famous Port Sunlight factory in Wirral.

The people in this picture, which was taken in 1895, would not recognise modern Manchester with its designer shops and expensive flats.

But some of our older readers may remember firefighters battling a blaze at the building when it was hit during an air raid by German bombers during World War II and caused severe damage.

Today's image is dominated by the swanky apartment block, No1 Deansgate, where a penthouse home sells for more than £1m.

It was the IRA bomb in 1996 in nearby Corporation Street which ripped out the heart of the city centre.

However city leaders used it as an opportunity and launched a £550m rebuilding programme which has helped create a vibrant, modern shopping area that stands as a striking symbol of the renaissance of Manchester.

The archive photograph is part of a collection showing Manchester in the past 250 years at Central Library.

What are your memories of Manchester City Centre? Have your say.
