Then and Now: The Crown and Anchor
Martin Dillon  THEN: The Crown in 1906Our latest image in our Then and Now series shows the Crown and Anchor pub in Cateaton Street by Shambles Square in the city centre. The fine butcher's shop that stood next to the pub in 1906 has since been absorbed into it. During the Second World War, a bomb left a large crater in the square and damaged some surrounding buildings. In more recent times another devastating blast by the IRA caused massive destruction.  NOW: Still servingThe Old Wellington and Sinclair's Oyster Bar were dismantled and rebuilt to the right of the Crown and Anchor. To the left is the £2.9m Manchester Cathedral visitor centre, opened by the Queen. Opposite the pub now stand upmarket store Harvey Nichols and Marks & Spencer. The archive photo is part of a collection on a computer at the Central Library, chronicling Manchester's changing face in the past 250 years.
